What the overlap actually looks like
A typical Indian working day runs from roughly 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM India Standard Time. For a client in New York, that translates to roughly 10:30 PM to 7:30 AM Eastern Time — mostly overnight. For a client in London, there is a meaningful afternoon overlap from about 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM GMT.
- United States clients: 1.5 to 4 hours of live overlap in the early morning or late evening, plus overnight async progress.
- European clients: 3 to 5 hours of live overlap in the afternoon, plus morning progress before the local day starts.
- Either configuration supports daily standups, code reviews, and pairing when planned intentionally.
The handoff ritual matters more than the time zone
Teams that get the most from time-zone overlap run a simple end-of-day handoff: what was completed, what is blocked, what is queued for the next working block, and where the context lives (ticket, document, or thread). The Indian team picks up from that handoff at the start of their day. The client reviews output at the start of theirs.

When to widen the overlap window
Some engagements need more live collaboration — a product launch, a complex architecture decision, or a sprint with heavy pairing. In those cases, Faraway Team can stagger start times so key team members begin one to two hours earlier or later, widening the shared window without burning people out.
